Back pain can strike without any warning … and does not always mean you need to worry. Understanding the type of back pain is crucial to finding the best way to manage the pain.
Sudden Back pain (benign)
Back pain often comes on following exertion or a sudden movement. The pain can sometimes be so sharp that it takes a person’s breath away, but it usually goes away on its own or with anti-inflammatories. This pain is often caused by muscle spasms or “muscle knots”. If the pain does not go away, LiteCross corsets and braces can support the lumbar region during recovery.
Nighttime back pain
If back pain comes on during the night, it is often caused by poor posture during the day or an unsupportive mattress or unsuitable pillows. Some cases of back pain at night can be a sign of conditions such as scoliosis, hernias, spinal stenosis, kidney stones, or gynaecological problems. Don’t worry, but don’t ignore the pain either: it is advisable to consult a specialist if it does not improve.
Back pain and rheumatism
Lower back pain that continues for months and improves with movement may be linked to rheumatic conditions such as arthritis or spondyloarthritis. It is more serious, but can be managed with an early diagnosis and a targeted course of treatment.
Remember: back pain is very common and often not a sign of anything more serious. Listening to your body is the first step on the path to feeling better.
If symptoms persist or worsen, it is always best to consult your doctor.
